Recently, I was afforded an editorial internship with lookbooks.com posting fashion reviews for the homepage. What appealed to me the most about Lookbooks was the actual location. Founded in NYC, Lookbooks is right in the heart of everything. I decided to travel bi-weekly to attend the editorial staff meetings, to make sure that I gain as much experience as possible from this great opportunity. Meeting with the editorial staff for the first time on June 7th didn’t exactly go as planned. Instead of Le Pain Quotidien in the West Village being our venue of choice, I was informed via e-mail while already en route, that I would be attending the Forever 21 “Walk On Water” Fashion Show, sponsored by Smashbox Cosmetics at Frying Pan/Pier 66 instead.

Runway

Forever 21 teamed up with a reality show, To Be A Star Academy, to celebrate the opening of their brand new flagship store in Times Square. As thrilled as I was to attend, I immediately became overwhelmed. Traveling alone to a function in a city you’re still not quite accustomed to is a headache! But I quickly fixed my attitude and set out to find my way to Chelsea Pier. When I finally arrived, the show had already began, yet I had a feeling that I hadn’t missed much. I was in awe of the crowd, the beautiful view of the Hudson River, the setup of the runway, but not so much the styling and choreography of the show.

Red Carpet Ready look

Exec. Producer Jason Metz and models

Red Carpet Ready look

Twelve models who were mediocre at best, graced the runway in Forever 21 outfits. The show had rather unoriginal scene titles: Fitness, Beach with the Girls, Party at the Club, and Red Carpet Ready. Kimmie Smith-Kitten Lounge Editor in Chief and Jeannine Morris – Beauty Sweet Spot Editor in Chief were the hosts of the “Walk On Water” event. Morris was quoted on her site stating, “Even though I’ve done on-air work, this was my first time hosting a live event and I loved it!” In my opinion, Forever21 would’ve been better off choosing a B or C list celebrity to host the event instead.

Hosts of the event: Kimmie Smith and Jeannine Morris

Needless to say, I never got the chance to meet with my fellow interns that day. I missed them upon arrival. Apparently, the show started an hour late and for many, that’s an unacceptable mishap. Fortunately, I mingled with many people, took several professional photos, and enjoyed the perks of my press pass, (and gift bag). All of which are the fruitful experiences I had hoped to leave away with.
LiveStyle, composed of a seven member committee: Bridget Nistico, Kelli Lemon, Darryl Ward, Doug Bass, Jason Ford, Jameson Deloatch, and myself worked diligently to bring an event aesthetically pleasing to Station 9 in DC. Since the model call, 23 wonderful models were chosen and the show turned out to be a memorable experience for all in attendance.
The doors opened at 3pm as attendees made their way to the second level to view contemporary art from several talented local artists. Body painted live models gave the showcase an artistic edge as complimentary appetizers were provided. Specialized cocktails sponsored by Tanqueray, were a favorite among guests as Tanqueray models passed them out to guests during the event. UpInTheMix media portal photographers captured attendees socializing, networking and happily posing in front of the Tanqueray back drop. SHY Magazine who featured a detailed article on LiveStyle and the Dexterity event prior to the show, were in attendance as well <–See article.

Dear Reader,
I would personally like to apologize for neglecting Model·City·Zen within the past three months. I’ve sought after a few great job openings out-of-state, began thinking of ways to expand my venture, became obsessed with twitter, and of course trying to stay on top of an abundant amount of responsibilities. But I’m back on track, and ready to start anew! In hopes of gaining more appeal AND new readers.. *smile.., the next few blogs will pertain to recent events that have quite honestly molded my vision for the future of this site. There’s also various opportunities I’ve seized since my last post in February that I’d like to ponder on. And amazingly they all correlate with fashion, awareness, and spiritual growth. Once again, Model·City·Zen isn’t just a blog to me, it’s a lifestyle!

Sincerely,

S. Christian

Rachel Roy's name has finally RE-surfaced in a positive AND fashionable light. Kudos to her!

It’s easy to quickly mistake Rachel Roy for a model off first glance. She’s stunning, her name rings a bell, but who exactly is she? Spotted on the red carpet of fashion/entertainment events for several years, and divorced from Damon Dash whom she has 2 children with, slightly places her in the limelight but not for the all the right reasons. For those who may not have their 4 inch stiletto foot in the door of today’s fashion industry, Rachel is a talented American designer honing four collections of her clothing brand, RACHEL ROY.

Originally from Northern California, Rachel attended Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, MD. After graduation she moved to New York City to work freelance; styling magazine shoots and music videos. She became an Intern for ROCAWEAR, working in every department from the mail room to women’s design. She eventually became the Creative Director, overseeing seven licensees and running all the design departments and their teams for ROCAWEAR Juniors and Girls. She started her own clothing brand, RACHEL ROY in the fall of 2004, and it debuted in stores in the spring of 2005. Many A-Listers have been seen wearing her designs such as: First Lady Michelle Obama, Eva Mendes, Sharon Stone, and Penelope Cruz. Since 2008, Rachel has teamed up with Jones Apparel Group, Inc. to introduce new product categories in the U.S. She’s launched a Rachel Roy diffusion brand that is offered exclusively through Macy’s. Her collection is available at many known department stores and top specialty stores worldwide.

Personally, I own several pieces from the RACHEL ROY collection: A shirt dress that I wore for my 25th birthday (with my own adjustments of course), a necklace, and three pair of earrings (ALL of them are hot). I’m a fan of her outerwear and jewelry the most because they”re original with funky patterns and ethnic inspired design. Not to mention, a series of her handbags and bracelets, are handcrafted by African women in Rwanda and Tanzania to sustain their own health care, nutrition, and children’s education through the sales of Rachel Roy’s products! Check them out now via website.
Ms. Roy has also teamed up with English singer/songwriter, Estelle to launch a limited edition jewelry line available next month at Macy’s. To allow jewelry fanatics to get a first glimpse of the line, the designers will make some items from the collection available through Rachel Roy’s facebook page. Pricing for these items are economical, ranging between $34 and $195 each.

What I love most about Rachel Roy is the humble way she began her success. She followed her love for fashion to New York and put in major work as an Intern for a well-known urban line. The transition from working within a company known specifically for street wear, to ultimately designing garments based on modern, yet classic femininity boasts hard work. It’s quite discerning as a consumer to come across weak apparel designed by famous celebs that I’m certain they wouldn’t wear! It’s important for anyone who is in the process of branding themselves, to know who they are as a person first. Be honest with what you like/ dislike because hypocrisy ruins your brand. I respect that the ensembles that Rachel is caught wearing in paparazzi photos, are actually RACHEL ROY aesthetics. She was once quoted saying, “My biggest influences are strong, creative women that chart their own path lead their own lives, and drive the course of history.” And with minor detours and bumps along her own path, Rachel Roy’s name has finally RE-surfaced in a positive AND fashionable light. Kudos to her!

The end of 2009 is quickly nearing its end, and I am both excited and somewhat apprehensive about what 2010 has in store. Despite my mixed emotions, I feel an urgent need to aspire more for myself and the people around me. During this time of year people seem to always ask the same question, “What will the new year offer ME?” as they wait to be given a hand out. Instead of doing that, or creating a list of fabricated resolutions to abide to, simply ask yourself “what will I offer the new year?” Assuming you put forth hard work and lots of effort this past year, then you just may receive the “change” you feel you deserve. On the other hand, what makes you so sure that 2010 will be any different for you than 2009, if you aren’t living to your fullest potential NOW? Similar to a cash transaction, you will not receive any “change” back if you don’t give more than what’s expected. In 2010, I will make a conscience effort in not only giving more than my share because I want to, but leaving a meaningful tip to boot! But I digress…

Change can be wonderful. People change their appearances, improve their relationships, get great new jobs, even great new spouses. But then you have those changes that are negatively rooted. That’s what change means for a lot of us, stuff you have to pretend to embrace even as your heart sinks, you know it’s going to end badly and you already feel the inevitable loss. The irony of it all is that we want change as much as we fear it and we need it as much as we need safety. It doesn’t matter whether you like change or not, whether you embrace it or run in the opposite direction. Not only will changes be taking place, they will be taking place all the time, with and without your participation. From the slight (they just discontinued my favorite lipstick) to the significant (deaths, break-ups, layoffs). It turns out even if you make no changes in your drama-filled friendships, your stifling job, or your lousy relationship, all those things will change anyway. Your choice is to either “be the change you wish to see in the world” like Ghandi suggests, or to wait and see what “surprises” the universe has for you as you cling to what you thought was safety.

Mostly change is as inevitable as rain in the spring. Some of us just put on rain coats and splash forward, some of us choose to stay home, a few lively people shed their clothes and rain dance in their yards, and then there are those who still choose to go out and get deeply, resentfully, and miserably wet. But no matter what, the rain falls. It falls on dry grass, which is the kind we love and it falls too on weddings, the kind we loathe.
Change = Catch 22.
Refraining from negativity throughout these changes is key. Negativity materializes into negative occurrences, and negative occurrences i.e drama, strips the positive energy from our being. The more negativity we allow to linger within us, the greater chance we have of sabotaging our own happiness.

Change is hard to accept and it is also hard to try to do. You have to look deep inside yourself to change your life effectively. You should try to find the reasons why you’re in need of change, and also why you want to change; because there is no way that you’ll be able to figure out one without figuring out the other. We all have a choice on how to react to changes. We could stay dependent upon the negative impacts that change brings, or we could live according to common Zen teachings and let the occurrences pass, and move on. You can use Zen to completely make your life better and more controlled. When you are looking to gain more control over your actions, using Zen can be a great adventure. You will be able to take things in stride and learn how to deal with the pressures of life that can really bother you in today’s world. When you begin to meditate you find the answers that you seek. It is up to you to take that knowledge and listen to yourself, while using the knowledge to keep yourself going strong. When it comes to meditation, the key is to find peace. Once you have found your peace you are able to live with Zen. But most importantly, you are able to live with yourself.

“A death sentence, for an act that takes an hour or less to commit?” A rather rhetorical question, but one I tend to ask myself when thinking of HIV/AIDS. Since its discovery in the 1980′s it’s rapidly evolved into a global epidemic that has become one of the greatest threats to human health and development, yet one that we know so little about. This disease has taken a severe toll on multiple communities in the United States; bearing the heaviest burden on African-Americans, gay and bisexual men of all races, and Latinos. Still ignorant to this epidemic because you think you are not susceptible to it, makes you a major part of the problem NOT the solution. Understanding the implications that surround this disease is vital in preventing yourself from catching it, as well as to pass on knowledge to others who put themselves at risk.

1. WHAT IS IT?
H.uman I.mmunodeficiency V.irus better known as, HIV is much like other viruses you may be familiar with, such as those that cause the common cold. However, HIV is different because the immune system can never fully get rid of it. The virus hides in the immune system and other cells in the body. HIV causes significant damage to the immune system, leaving it open to other dangerous infections. Fluids known to contain high concentrations of HIV include:blood, semen, breast milk, vaginal fluids, and rectal mucous. Transmission of these bodily fluids from one person to another can cause infection. Certain types of behavior carry a higher risk of HIV transmission than others. People particularly vulnerable to HIV include injecting drug users, prostitutes, and gay/bisexual men. In many people’s minds, HIV and AIDS are closely linked with these groups, which can lead to even greater prejudice against people already treated as outsiders. Yet the majority of HIV infections are transmitted through sex between men and women. Nearly half of all adults living with HIV are female. HIV can enter the body through: cuts & sores, the mouth that has bleeding gums or sores, needles (syringes), opening of the penis, the lining of the vagina and/or cervix, and the lining of the anus or rectum.

A.cquired I.mmune D.eficiency S.yndrome, also known as AIDS, is the last stage of HIV infection. People at this stage of HIV disease are vulnerable to other infections. When someone has one or more specific infections, certain cancers, or a very low number of T-cells, the person is considered to have AIDS. A person with AIDS requires medical intervention and treatment to prevent death.

2. HOW CLOSELY DOES “THIS” EFFECT YOU?

WRAP IT UP!

In 2007, statistics showed the largest percentage of diagnosed HIV/AIDS patients were African-Americans representing 51% of cases. The AVERT website stated, “In 2007, the District of Columbia reported a far higher rate of AIDS diagnoses than any other area (though the rate in the wider ‘DMV’ area was surpassed by other metropolitan areas). A 2009 local government report found that DC had a HIV prevalence rate of 3%, including figures as high as 7.2% for 40-49 year old’s, and 6.5% for black men.” Despite Examiner.com‘s stats that the overall numbers have declined significantly, it is still an astounding percentage! It proves our communities unfortunate carelessness involving unsafe sex and drug usage (the 2 most common ways of catching the virus).

3. SO…WHAT CAN YOU DO?

AIDS Memorial Quilt on the Nat' Mall in Wash., DC in 1987

December marks HIV/AIDS Awareness Month. Although, December 1st was National World’s Aids Day, we should still continue to spread the word NOT the disease, by GETTING TESTED! It really is that simple. The rapid HIV test can produce results within 20 minutes of taking the test. Its uses either your blood sample or oral fluids. It’s easy to use and does not require laboratory facilities or highly trained staff. Please also be aware that there is a “window period” after you take a HIV test. Which is a period of time between HIV infection and the production of antibodies. During this time, an antibody test may give a ‘false negative’ result, which means the test will be negative, even though a person is infected. *To avoid false negative results, antibody tests are recommended six months after potential exposure to HIV infection. If an individual’s test is still negative after six months, and they have not been at risk of HIV infection, it means they are not infected.

Again, we all must do more—as individuals, communities, and as a nation—to expand the reach of effective prevention efforts to those at risk and stop the spread of HIV.

"Cheap doesn't have to mean bad quality--it just means knowing how to make something less expensively." -Nathalie Rykiel (Sonia Rykiel's Creative Director, and daughter).

Just in time for the holidays, Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) have made it impossible for consumers worldwide to exclude the infamous retail chain from their Christmas lists. Known for its contemporary clothing for a portion of the price, H&M has evolved into an authority figure within the fashion world right before my eyes. “We’re always trying to find a new angle,” Margaret Van den Bosch, Creative Advisor for H&M was quoted saying in Vogue. Instead of taking the route of other stores, selling cheap runway replicas to boost their appeal, they’ve instead perfected the art of A-lister collaborations. Thus, giving H&M lovers the opportunity to be introduced (and later obsessed with), high-fashion designers like Jimmy Choo, Matthew Williamson, Comme des Garçons’, Roberto Cavalli, Stella McCartney, and Karl Lagerfeld. All of whom launched collections in H&M’s since 2004.

Following the path of Jimmy Choo who launched his collection just last month, Sonia Rykiel’s first installment hits stores tomorrow, Dec. 5th 2009 in 1,500 H&M locations.

Sonia Rykiel for H&M

The Sonia Rykiel for H&M lingerie collection comes in six themes. A tuxedo is revisited as twenties inspired loungewear in velvet with belt. There are 100% silk chiffon separates which include camisoles, nightgowns and kimono-style peignoirs, just to name a few. Briefs are low-cut or hotpant style with grosgrain details, which I love! The bra styles are also unique with a hint of french flair. The color schemes are pale pink, black, and multi-stripes in harmonies of old rose, violet and black. I would have preferred the color red as a choice since it is the holiday season. I am also not too enthused with the array of accessories that embody rhinestones, such as the velvet pillow, bearing the message “Belle en Rykiel (Beauty in Rykiel).

Sonia Rykiel for H&M

However, this is the first guest designer to create a lingerie collection for H&M, she also has signed its first Christmas collab. A second line for spring, will feature knitwear for women and girls in only 250 selected stores on February 20, 2010. I’ve seen Rykiel’s past work, and she has dope knitwear and dresses. I honestly hope to find better pieces of hers this spring. A few of my personal faves from the H&M lingerie collection are pictured below. For a better glimpse of the glows & woes of Sonia Rykiel’s collection, just visit an H&M store near you tomorrow!
The social, political, and economic occurences that face our communities |City|. And lastly, mentally stimulating tips and advice on the art of living, from our very own inherited wisdom |Zen|.

Offering illumination into these three definitive areas of pop-culture weekly, Model·City·Zen will strive to bring forth unique information, rather than hand-me-down stories already seen in other blogs and publications. Each topic (Model, City, and Zen) has it’s very own personal message, and they play a major part to the validity of this blog.

Armed with an exceptionally creative mind, assertive attitude, and unruly wit, I firmly believe that I am a force to be reckoned with. I am well aware of the real worlds’ chew’em up and spit’em out reputation and I refuse that fate be my own. At 24, I’m leaning on my talents to help mold me into a “Jane of all Trades,” yet it’s becoming a Master of these trades that will ultimately separate me from the rest.

Born in SE Washington, DC and raised in a single parent household gave me a strong appreciation for hard work and most importantly endurance. My mother intended to nurture my interests early on by enrolling me in several clubs/organizations. Capitol Hill Arts Workshop being one of the most influential, introduced me to the arts. There I studied theater, dance, and creative writing. However, to escape the rise of crime in the DC area we moved to Prince George’s County, Maryland. My father, a Vietnam veteran and a successful News Director for 96.3 WHUR in the 1980′s-early 90′s, played a pivotal role in my love for journalism. Many of the basic principles he instilled in his students while a Mass Communications professor at Howard University during my teenage years, made a lasting impression with me as well. He worked as a Freelance Journalist before his untimely death in 2006. So much passion that he exuded in his work, persuaded me to follow his legacy early on while a student at Suitland High School. By my senior year I was interning with AFTRA & SAG (American Federation of Television Radio Artists &Screen Actors Guild) to broaden my understanding of television and radio.

When accepted to Virginia Commonwealth University (Richmond, VA), I immediately decided to major in Mass Communications. I was so intrigued by the unconventional way of living by the diverse student body, that my freedom of expression in more ways than through speaking, formed right before my eyes. I held the position of Spectrum Writer for the school paper, The Commonwealth Times while also gaining a newfound appreciation for fashion. I changed my major to English with a minor in Fashion Merchandising which allowed me to please my heart, as well as my mind. I started modeling in Virginia, and became heavily involved in fashion organizations on VCU’s campus. Fashion show production helped develop my PR skills, and also my Styling ability.

My urge to give back to the urban community never wavered, as I began tutoring elementary school students in reading through the AmeriCorps program. Soon after, I was afforded the opportunity to intern for RVA TV/ RVA Magazine. With minimal experience working in pre/post production, I proved my willingness to learn and eventually became the Show Host for “Welcome to RVA.” Several episodes later, I started working alongside the Fashion Editor of RVA Magazine, as a writing contributor. I assisted with publications by conducting interviews, researching upcoming stories, and styling for photo shoots for Rumors Boutique.

Now labeled as a “young professional,” I’d like to take that title and transform it into a term, of higher standing. Yes, I am young. Yes, I am a professional. I have a long way to go, but I’ve come so far from where I was once standing. I am a Model Citizen. An affirmation that so many of us can relate to. My magnetic chemistry with fashion, my profound interest in social awareness, and my deep spiritual connection to the belief that we all have inherited wisdom, has collectively inspired me to create Model·City·Zen. A blog celebrating the movement of progression.
